Education grants salary scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year to 1,723 university students and 158 non-abandonment grants

The Ministry of Education, Research, Culture and Sport has decided to grant a total of 7.8 million euros in salary scholarships for 1,723 Valencian public university students who are studying first or second grade. Likewise, it has given its approval to 158 non-abandonment scholarships for the students of the Valencian public universities, which has a maximum of 24 credits to complete their studies.

The Ministry of Education, Research, Culture and Sport has decided to grant a total of 7.8 million euros in salary scholarships for 1,723 Valencian public university students who are studying first or second grade. Likewise, it has given its approval to 158 non-abandonment scholarships for the students of the Valencian public universities, which has a maximum of 24 credits to complete their studies.

As for the salary scholarships, it is the second consecutive year in which the Ministry of Education delivers these grants in order to avoid self-exclusion and ensure that students who begin their studies can finish their university education with a salary to be trained . In this way, students can collaborate with their families by providing a salary close to the minimum interprofessional salary of up to 600 euros during the four years of training, provided that it exceeds academically the courses.

From the department headed by Vicent Marzà have highlighted the 86% increase in the amount allocated by the Ministry to resolve the aid corresponding to the annuity of 2017 with respect to the amount intended for the 2016 annuity, given that a total of 7,797,000 euros compared to 4,191,000 euros allocated in 2016. In the same way, they have underlined the consequent increase of 85.2% of beneficiary students, which has gone from the 930 beneficiaries of last year to 1,723 of this year.

This resolution will be complemented with a new one that will allow increasing the amount allocated to scholarships salary up to an additional 2.9 million euros, corresponding to the annuity of 2018, which will be granted to those students who are not beneficiaries of the scholarships of the Ministry of Education .

In this way, the beneficiary students can have a salary of up to 600 euros per month per course, which will help finance the cost of carrying out university studies and boost the economy of families with low levels of income.

Specifically, of the students receiving salary scholarships, 676 correspond to the University of Valencia, and receive 3,066,000 euros; 233 students study at the Universitat Politècnica de València and the amount awarded reaches 1,053,000 euros.

As for the University of Alacant, the number of beneficiaries is 429 and they will receive 1,939,500 euros; for the students of the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, the number of beneficiaries is 199 and they will receive 901,500 euros and, finally, the number of beneficiaries of the Miguel Hernández University in Elche is 186 and they will receive 837,000 euros. By sexes, 64% of the beneficiaries are women, that is, 1,103, and 36% are men, that is 620.

Related imageOn the other hand, the Conselleria has decided to grant a total of 158 scholarships of non-abandonment for the students of the Valencian public universities with a maximum of 24 credits left to finish their university studies. A heading for the academic year 2017-18 is destined for this purpose, out of a total of 141,948 euros, which represents an increase of 17.4% with respect to the previous call, which is intended to help students with difficulties can finish their studies from the third registration and successive.

Specifically, of the 158 beneficiaries of the scholarships, 36 carry out their studies at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, 42 at the University of Alacant, 38 at the University of Valencia, 24 at the Universitat Jaume I, and 18 at the Miguel University Hernandez

The amount awarded by the Regional Ministry to these universities as compensation for the fees of the student beneficiaries of the scholarships is distributed as follows: 41,761 euros for the Universitat Politècnica de València, 31,402 euros for the University of Valencia, 36,825 euros for the University d’Alacant, 13,890 euros for the Miguel Hernández University, and 18,069 euros for the Universitat Jaume I.

This is the third year that the Ministry of Education grants this type of aid, and that has increased the amount allocated by 132% from the 61,608 euros awarded in the 2015-16 academic year to the 141,948 euros of the 2017-18 academic year. This has also meant increasing the number of beneficiaries by 46.3%, going from 108 in the 2015-16 academic year to the 158 students who received a scholarship in the 2017-18 academic year.

They recalled that the exemption from fees only covers the subjects or credits in which the applicant has enrolled in the 2017-2018 academic year in a single degree and specialty.

They specify that they are not part of the enrollment grant, those credits that exceed the minimum necessary to obtain the degree in question, or special prices that accrue as a result of validations, recognition or adaptations of studies, subjects or credits.

The Ministry has allocated a total of 23,521,300 euros to all scholarships convened in 2017 – scholarships for university studies, academic excellence, complementary to the Ministry of Education, Erasmus scholarships, transport, non-abandonment and salary grants tied to income–, which represents 12.4 percent more funds than the previous year, in which 20.9 million euros were allocated.

With this aid program, the Consell has the objective “that no student is left without access to Valencian public universities for economic reasons”, they conclude.
